As we age our eyes tend to change. The symptoms can be a sign of a small problem or they can mean you need to see your eye doctor right away. These are a few of the most common and why they either need immediate attention or can wait until you have a routine examination. One problem is called floaters. They can be a simple problem or they may mean something more serious. They are characterized by tiny specks that float before your eyes. They can be seen in the sunlight or in a brightly lit room. If you start to see new ones or they are accompanied by flashes of light, you need to see someone immediately. This is a serious condition that needs immediate medical attention.

Do your eyes tear a lot? If so this could mean they are just sensitive. On the other hand, it could mean an eye infection. If it is accompanied by a discharge that is yellow or green this could very well mean infection. It could be a tear duct that is blocked.

Problems with your eyelids can come from allergies or they could be a more serious problem. If you have a growth on your eyelid this may require surgery. The more common problem of itching, swelling, and turning red may just be a simple problem that you can treat yourself.

Some problems with your eye are due to getting older and some are actually an eye disease. Some of the different type of eye diseases are as follows:

1) Cataracts - Sometimes these can form on the eye’s lens which will cause the person to lose their eyesight. They can develop slowly and they may not notice them for a while. Some do not get larger however, if they do, surgery may be required. They can get to the point of covering the lens until vision is lost.

2) Corneal Disease - This is a disease that causes redness, pain, watering eyes, or loss of partial vision. The cornea is either damaged from injury or disease and can result in either mild problems to severe. In the more severe cases you may need a corneal transplant to remedy the problem. Often this is more common in older adults.

3) Glaucoma - This problem occurs when there is too much fluid inside the eye. The pressure can damage the optic nerve leading to blindness. This problem usually does not have symptoms that show up early. The basic way to find it is by having regular eye exams. This can help to prevent blindness before it is too late. Surgery may be required to relieve the pressure on the optic nerve.
