Anyone who has experienced Alzheimer’s with a family member knows how heart breaking this disease can become.  Watching a loved one who was once vibrant and outgoing transform into someone unrecognizable leaves you feeling helpless.Even though there has been many advances in treating the disease and new drugs are being released everyday to help alleviate the symptoms.  Yet, 4.5 million people suffer from the disease today. Because the disease progresses slowly at first, we often don’t realize or recognize the symptoms.   It is only after your loved one is at the point they have trouble coping with everyday life or their judgement becomes questionable do we actually begin to feel something is terribly wrong.  On occasion, it isn’t until a family member or friend who hasn’t seen the person in awhile comes for a visit and recognizes almost immediately that there is a problem.

It is common for those suffering with Alzheimer’s to experience a change in personality and fall into states of depression. When dealing with someone who has Alzheimer’s it is very important that care givers and loved ones show patience and love.   You can make a significant difference in the quality of life for an Alzheimer sufferer by doing little things.  Putting up a bulletin board to identify who has been visiting and when others are scheduled to visit can help them keep in touch with the passage of time.

Some of the difficulty experienced by care givers is that the survival rate after the disease has become rampant varies so widely from person to person.  The average rate is seven to nine years. But some patients will survive for as long as 20 years. Eventually, many sufferers end up in long-term care facilities because they are not able to take care of themselves nor are their relatives able to take care of them.  The quality of care (including nursing) and the amount of time makes the strain on family and friends extremely high.

Early awareness and prevention is the best remedy at this point in time for Alzheimer’s.  Some studies suggest that a healthy diet, plenty of exercise, and taking nutritional supplements that contain antioxidants and are nutrient dense (more than 100 nutrients in a single serving) may help delay or prevent the disease.

I’ll be presenting more on Alzheimer’s and updates on any new studies.  In the meantime, I would recommend taking a look at the positive effects that a nutritional supplement combined with a healthy diet and exercise can have on your body by reading the article:
