This seems like one of the toughest cold and flu seasons yet. Many of the people I know (including myself) got some type of bug this season and it seemed that whatever was going around lasted longer and had more severe effects on our bodies. I’m careful to try and separate observation from scientific study because when we generalize for the few people we know and extrapolate that to the general population we may get a false impression of what is really happening.

There are two major types of diabetes - Type 1 which is often called juvenile diabetes and Type 2 which is often called adult diabetes or adult-onset diabetes. Although diabetes can strike at any age, Type 1 diabetes usually strikes children and young adults. In Type 1 diabetes, cells in the pancreas called beta cells, these are the ones that make insulin to control blood sugar levels in our body, do not function. So in order to maintain or manage blood sugar levels, people with Type 1 diabetes must inject insulin or have it delivered by a small pump into their body. In effect, they must supply the insulin that the beta cells in their pancreas are not supplying. Type 1 diabetes accounts for about five to ten percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes.

I had a question the other day from a long time associate that is religious about taking their nutritional supplement every day (yea!). They now wanted to add an exercise routine, nothing too strenuous because they are in their mid-sixties, and wanted to know the difference between strength training and aerobics. I thought to myself and for a moment and realized that it was an excellent question!
