There are several types of soluble calcium supplement available, but the very best also include magnesium and Vitamin D. The reason is that Calcium is not naturally absorbed into the body, and without the magnesium and Vitamin D, the calcium supplement would simply pass through your digestive system.
Remember that if magnesium and Vitamin D are not included in your supplement, then you would have to take them separately for the calcium to be effective.
In addition to calcium, glucosamine is needed to generate the cartilage essential for the protection of your bones. Glucosamine forms the connective tissue responsible for tendons, ligaments, blood vessel walls, skin, and many other parts of your body. That is why any calcium supplement should also contain glucosamine. Glucosamine is used as a preventive treatment for osteoarthritis and other problems of the connective tissue. Although it does not form cartilage directly itself it is used by the body to create glucosaminoglycans which are directly responsible.
One final thought…Rheumatoid arthritis responds well to Omega 3 fatty acids and 3 and 6 are recommended for the treatment of osteoporosis because they deposit calcium in the bones and help to increase their strength. There is evidence that if you are deficient in these fatty acids, then you will suffer bone loss quicker than those with an adequate supply. So a calcium supplement that also includes a balanced blend of Omega 3, 6 and 9 will help protect you even further from the effects of arthritis and osteoporosis.

Well a calcium supplement needs a few key minerals to be worthwhile taking at all. Just a few examples are :
These are all in my calcium supplement
Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) 1600 IU 400%
Vitamin K2 (as MK-7) 100 mcg **
Calcium (from Algas Calcareas) 720 mg 72%
Magnesium (from Algas Calcareas) 350 mg 54%
Trace Minerals (from Algas Calcareas) 1464 mg **
Boron (FruiteX B® Calcium Fructoborate) 3 mg **
Vitamin C (calcium ascorbate) 50 mg 80%
along with other trace minerals that are all very important, just look into what you are going to buy and make sure it contains the right minerals because they all go into play when having a proper calcium supplement.

Jimb…I agree that you need to look at the ingredients to ensure that a calcium supplment provides the right mix of ingredients. Vitamin D and magnesium are important, but a calcium supplement with inulin and the Omegas (Omega 3 6 and 9) are also important for absorption and processing by your body.
Thank you for your comments and the reference to your calcium supplement.
