The word “pain” comes from Latin poena - meaning a fine or a penalty.  You can think about pain as the primary way your body tells you that something is wrong and needs your attention.  I’ve read somewhere that you can think about the word pain as an acronym.

Pay Attention Inside Now == PAIN

Doctors make the distinction between “acute pain” and “chronic pain.”

Acute pain is the normal short-term sensation that is experience when a part of the body is injured.  Unless there is a re-injury to the area, acute pain generally does not come back - there is no recurrence with acute pain.

Chronic pain is not a single instance and varies in origin and in the pain’s characteristics.  It may have been caused by an injury such as a sprained back, whiplash, or sports injury.  Chronic pain can also be caused by some organic injury such as arthritis, cancer, an ear infection.  But these conditions or injuries are not always necessary for a chronic pain syndrome to appear.  Some people suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia - a condition where sometimes it feels as if your whole body hurts.

Chronic pain persists for a long period of time.  While many older adults suffer from chronic pain, we often incorrectly assume that it is a result of getting older.  Yes, while we do feel more of the aches and pains as we get older, the majority of chronic pain sufferers are between the ages of 24 and 64!

Arthritis is one source of chronic pain.  Three types of arthritis generally lead to chronic, and often to the point of being debilitating, pain.  They are Osteoarthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and affects more than 21 million adults in the United States.  Osteoarthritis primarily affects the weight-bearing joints - the knees, hips, and spine.  Osteoarthritis can also affect the lower back and can lead to disc degeneration.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an inflammatory disease. The inflammation results in pain, stiffness, and loss of function in the affected joints.  Many of the people who suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis often are tired, have recurring fevers, and experience a general sense of not feeling well.

There are several lifestyle solutions that can prevent, control or treat pain and the conditions such as arthritis that cause the pain.

  • One is spinal alignments.  Going to the chiropractor can have positive effects on the lower back, legs, hips, and joints.
  • Second is exercise.  Sitting for long periods of time is stressful on the lower back.  Strong back muscles, developed through routine low impact exercise, will make it easier to walk, climb stairs, reduce pain and reduce the general stiffness felt in your muscles and joints.
  • Third is good nutrition.  A well-balanced diet, a nutritional supplement containing aloe vera - a natural anti-inflammatory, and a liquid calcium supplement with vitamin D and glucosomine will provide the nutritional building blocks your body needs rebuild and strengthen bones, joints, and muscle.
  • Fourth is body detoxification.  Cleaning out the colon and digestive tract enables the body to absorb nutrients that were otherwise blocked by the buildup of waste in the lower intestine and colon.  A multi-part colon cleansing with a good bulking agent to flush away the waste (couldn’t resist the pun) combined with an activated charcoal to keep from getting headaches usually works best.

Finally, one needs to maintain a positive attitude.  I know that when in pain, especially a chronic pain that you just can’t seem to get rid of, it’s difficult to maintain a healthy attitude.  But maintaining the positive attitude will help you stay in control of your life and help influence the effectiveness of any treatment.  You can learn more about treating Osteoporosis, reducing inflammation, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle by reading the full articles.
