Our skin is the largest organ in our body.  I know several registered nurses who continually remind me that nothing should go on our skin that we wouldn’t put inside our body.  Think about that for a moment.  Would you swallow your shampoo?  How about ingesting the conditioner or bath gel?  Many of these items contain chemicals and substances that would be toxic if swallowed. There are many products on the market that are considered natural.  Soaps, lotions, antiperspirants all can be bought with the ‘healthy’ label.  In addition to looking for the natural skin and hair products, we can use cleansing herbs to detoxify and tone our skin.

Besides being our largest organ, our skin is also very absorbent.  Think about the many medications that are delivered through the skin:  nitro for heart patients, birth control, and nicotine for those wanting to stop smoking.  There are many more as delivery through the skin is one of the ‘preferred delivery methods’ for many drugs.  Nutritional elements can also be delivered through the skin using creams and ointments. This is especially true when the skin is warm and one of the reasons why a spa applies oils and herbs after the body has been warmed in the shower or sauna.

Just as we detoxify our bodies we may also want to routinely detoxify our skin.  Skin detoxification can actually cause an elimination of stored toxins contained deep within our bodies.  Once released, the toxins are transferred from our body through natural elimination channels, including the skin.   If you have ever had one in a spa, you know that a herbal body wrap can be both relaxing and invigorating.  While wrapped, the moist warmth is soothing and often aromatic.  Some body wraps last as long as one hour.  When the wraps are removed, your skin can feel smoother and softer to the touch.

As with our daily nutritional supplements, continued or repeated use of a herbal body wrap should yield greater results.  A series of four wraps, done three to five days apart can provide terrific results.  The repeated use of the body wrap promotes the cleansing and detoxifying process that began with the first application.

If you have considered using a herbal body wrap, make sure you check to see if they include instructional videos, 100% cotton terry cloths, etc.  While you can use your own cloths, the absorbency of the cotton is important.  Make sure you use clean 100% cotton terry cloths to promote maximum detoxification of the skin.  The videos or DVDs may provide tips or hints on the application, the length of time to use the wrap, and even suggestions on how to use a herbal body wrap in a soothing bath!

Remember a herbal body wrap:

  • Promotes Healthier Skin
  • Detoxifies the Skin
  • Detoxifies Fat Cells
  • Can Result in Weight Loss  (don’t assume this is only temporary…detoxing can improve body functions and eliminate stored waste/toxins; and the increased body functions may result in a shift in ideal weight)
