Everyone has known pain at some time or another. No, I’m not talking about a broken heart! A bruised knee, a stubbed toe, and a ‘splitting headache’ are all forms of everyday pain that each (alright….many) of us has experienced. We know that pain is your body’s way of telling you that you it has been damaged.
The way it works is your nervous system sends pain signals to the brain which in turns starts specific chemical processes that sensitize the affected area. The now damaged and sensitized area becomes inflamed. Depending on the severity of the injury or damage, your nervous system, automatic brain response, and resulting inflammation can occur for short or long periods of time. It’s the inflammation that’s that problem. It’s the reason why pro athletes do everything possible to stop an injured area from becoming inflamed. They use ice, hyperbaric chambers, even low-grade hypothermia (check the injury to the Buffalo Bills player injured at the start of the season where they cooled his body to 92 degrees to keep inflammation around his injured spin to a minimum).
Most of us don’t have access to hyperbaric chambers or can safely reduce our body temperatures! So what do we do? Turns out that there are specific foods and drinks that contain nutrients that have natural anti-inflammatory properties. Consuming these foods/drinks provides our bodies the tools needed to reduce the inflammation and in-turn, reduce the pain.
Chronic pain is something very different than stubbing a toe. Some of us have had the unfortunate experience of sustained and sometimes debilitating pain. Sometimes, chronic pain results in oversensitivity of our nervous system causing our pain response pathways to remain open. Think of it like a traffic light stuck on green and the cars driving through the light are carrying the message of pain and inflammation. A lower back injury is one example where even after healing, the biological gates through which pain signals pass can remain open. What happens is that even after the injury has healed, the pain continues, becoming an illness that quite literally takes control over your life. Chronic pain such as this reduces your energy, reduces your ability to sleep and rebuild, and adds significant stress to your body and lifestyle. If you or someone you know suffers from a back injury you know how debilitating it can become!
Fucoidan and fucose, two of the important nutrients found in sea vegetables are well known in Asian countries for their healing and pain-relieving effects. Studies on both animals and humans have shown that in certain conditions essential glyconutrients can help heal the body and return jammed pain pathways to their normal state. These nutrients can help increase ‘cellular communication’ – the way and efficiency cells, especially those around injured areas, communicate with other cells in the body. In effect, the traffic light gets fixed. The nutrients enable our body to heal itself and return to a normal operating state. Pretty neat considering the complexities of the human body but logical considering ‘we are what we eat!’

There is also more information available on how the combination of aloe vera and sea vegetables not only may help alleviate chronic pain, but may help reduce inflammation caused by diseases such as cancer.
