How do I fight the effects of aging?  Is there an anti-aging elixir that will keep me feeling young and vibrant?  Good questions and it may surprise you that there are answers!  Today, we may not enjoy good nutrition each day (fast food restaurants have seen to that) but we do have good research.  Scientists have found that arthritis, osteoporosis, and the general breakdown of bones and joints can be prevented or delayed with the right mixture of natural compounds.

Nearly every fruit and vegetable has vitamins and minerals in it.  We’ve talked a lot about the benefits of Aloe Vera and sea vegetation simply because they stand apart from general supplements.  In an aloe and sea vegetable blend there are all eight of the essential sugars needed for healthy cell communication in the body.

Our skin is the largest organ in our body.  I know several registered nurses who continually remind me that nothing should go on our skin that we wouldn’t put inside our body.  Think about that for a moment.  Would you swallow your shampoo?  How about ingesting the conditioner or bath gel?  Many of these items contain chemicals and substances that would be toxic if swallowed. There are many products on the market that are considered natural.  Soaps, lotions, antiperspirants all can be bought with the ‘healthy’ label.  In addition to looking for the natural skin and hair products, we can use cleansing herbs to detoxify and tone our skin.

We discussed a few hints and tricks on how to keep the pounds off while still enjoying that Thanksgiving meal (by the way, Happy Thanksgiving!).  Now how do you survive the mall, the crowds, the traffic, and the stress of shopping on Black Friday?

  • 1 in 3 Americans will be shopping for gifts today….no matter where you live in the U.S., that’s a lot of people!
  • We tend to buy the same types of gifts - electronics, clothing, and toys - they’re identified as the top sellers every year.
  • More than 20% of us shopping today will get up earlier than we do for work to go shopping.
  • More than 30% of us shopping today will spend more than 4 hours on our shopping trip.

If you are like many of us, keeping the weight off during the holiday season can be quite a challenge.  Here are several helpful hints to enjoy the holidays without feeling guilty in January…

  1. Instead of the good and usually big china, try a smaller plate.  Studies have shown that using a smaller plate results in eating less while still getting that ‘full’ feeling.
  2. When talking with friends and family at the dinner table, put down the knife and fork while your talking.  You will eat slower, giving your brain a chance to send the ‘full’ signals to the rest of your body.
  3. Don’t lick the spoon while cooking!  As we prepare the Thanksgiving meal (and any meal for that matter) we tend to sample and taste test.  The calories and fat intake can be considerable, sometimes equal to or more than what we would consume during dinner.
  4. Go for the after dinner walk.  Get the entire family outside for a short walk, the traditional throw the football around, or head to the mall for a stroll.  A short 20-minutes of activity will improve the digestive process and start your body using those calories you just consumed rather than converting them to fat.
  5. Go light on the alcohol.  Alcohol provides calories with no nutritional value.  Think of this the next time someone asks you if you would like another drink:  A Glass of Wine or a Bottle of Beer = One Glazed Donut!  Two glasses equals two donuts.  How many donuts are you going to eat today?

Taking a vitamin supplement on a regular basis requires us to form a habit.  In much of the literature about habits, most experts agree that it takes two to four weeks to adopt something as a habit.  The more frequent the daily occurance the quicker the habit will form.  With many of the pill supplements, you’re forced into taking them 2 or 3 times per day.  After about two weeks, you should be able to ‘remember’ or form the habit of taking the pills in the morning, around luchtime, and just before dinner.

Everyone has known pain at some time or another.  No, I’m not talking about a broken heart!  A bruised knee, a stubbed toe, and a ‘splitting headache’ are all forms of everyday pain that each (alright….many) of us has experienced.  We know that pain is your body’s way of telling you that you it has been damaged.

Essential Fatty Acids, abbreviated EFA’s, are considered the building blocks of our cells.  EFA’s are used by every cell in our body to create and maintain the cell walls (membranes).  The term ‘essential’ means that our bodies do not produce these acids and therefore we must consume them in the foods we eat.  So how do we get them into our bodies?
