Being healthy today is no guarantee to being healthy tomorrow.  As we age, our body processes change and our risk to debilitating disease increases.  It may be because of the growing trend in alternative medicine that the medical community and associated experts are beginning to agree that disease prevention is the key to maintaining optimal health.  That bears repeating – disease prevention is the key to maintaining optimal health.

While many of us knew about aloe’s topical healing properties on wounds, burns, and bites, it should not come as a surprise that aloe is excellent as a health food supplement (sometimes called a nutritional supplement or herbal supplement) for healing our digestive tracts enabling each of us to more fully absorb the nutrients our bodies need for health and vitality.

What we categorize as alternative medicine has been around for centuries.  The use of herbs, massage, accupuncture, and other forms of healing have all had their place in history.  Many are still practiced today.  Why?  Because our bodies are complex pieces of nature’s machinery.  One treatment does not fit all.

When we take a vitamin supplement, one of our main concerns or questions should be about bioavailablity.  Bioavailability is the rate at which the nutrients of a vitamin supplement can be absorbed by our bodies.  If the supplement is not absorbed then our body’s cells do not benefit from taking the supplement.  We actually flush the vitamin supplement down the drain!  What a waste of time and money.

Most of us have the strong desire to look and feel better. Unfortunately, looking and feeling great is something that many people believe is a luxury that they cannot afford or enjoy. It’s strange that 100 years ago, a fat man in a dark suit was the picture of wealth - think about the Monopoly game!  Today, wealth is attributed to people who look fit and trim.  Truly a dramatic change in attitudes and perceptions.

Have you ever noticed that when you bruise yourself or have a cut or scrape it always seems to get inflamed?  The inflammation is caused by an increase in blood to the affected area. But the increase is not always good for you. When an athlete is hurt or bruised, one of the first treatments is ice. The ice reduces the inflammation and allows the healing process to begin and complete more quickly.

If we can agree that a vitamin supplement is important and each of us should be taking a supplement, then what kind of supplement should we take?

More and more people are becoming concerned with the health.  Being in the nutrition business, one of the most common questions asked is why should someone take a vitamin supplement? Some choose to make the answer complicated but I believe it is pretty simple.  As each of us reaches that magic age of 35 our regular diets just don’t provide the vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other nutrients our bodies need. Taking a vitamin supplement every day provides our bodies with the necessary building blocks to repair damaged cells, strengthen bones and joints, and help a variety of other body processes.  These building blocks help keep us healthy and in turn, provides us a feeling of wellbeing.
